Note: Hausmate are not lighting designers or specialist so our advice is to talk to someone who is. However, we have some suggestions for our customers, based on our experience so far.

General suggestions:

  • If unsure about the light levels you would prefer, we suggest to fit more and then dim if the room is too bright
  • You could also leave cable loops into the ceiling for extra lights to be retrofitted
  • Put cable loops out of the way for when the ceiling is cut and put accurate measurements on a copy of the floor plan.
  • Lighting should be ‘cooler’ (blue-white) during the day and for working applications as this colour helps the body stay alert
  • Lighting should be ‘warmer’ (yellower) in the evening as this helps the body relax and prepare for sleep. These colours mimic the way natural light changes during the day

LED lighting suggestions:
  • Use 'warm white' LEDs in most applications (colour temperature of 2700 - 3000).
  • It would be ideally to not be able to see the LEDs directly, instead they should give a reflected light, as this is much softer on the eye.
  • It is also important to think about the beam angles from LEDs as they tend to be much narrower beams. A 6 watts LED is roughly equivalent to a 50W halogen filament bulb e.g. a standard GU10 spotlight/down-light.
  • A good LED bulb manufacturer - Osram.
  • Some not so good LED bulb manufacturers: Philips (they sell different desing products from different factories, with very different characteristics, but under the same Philips part number), Aurora, Silvana.
  • LED tapes - only buy sealed LED tapes - IP56 or better, as unsealed are easily damaged when installing or cleaning.
  • Use quality PSU (Power Supply Unit) designed for LED tapes as low quality/cheap PSUs can cause pulsing brightness when dimmed due to the way LEDs are dimmed using PWM (Pulse Width Modulation).
  • The LED lighting industry is moving towards 24Vdc LED tapes as these have lower current requirements so can use smaller cables
