Design

Hausmate installations are designed by Hausmate or specially trained installers. There are 2 levels of design:

  • Hausmate only design -  includes all cables and hardware for Hausmate system components and nothing else
  • Full design - includes TV distribution, Network Access Points (NAPs), Wireless Access Points (WAPs), positions of 13A sockets on drawings (but not in wiring schedules), smoke alarms etc.

The plans supplied by Hausmate are split into 3 for each floor of the buildings. There is a high level plan which is from 300mm below the ceiling and above, a middle plan which is for 300mm below ceiling to 800mm above the floor, and a low level plan which is for 800mm above the floor and below. These plans show the rough location of items within a zone. For exact positions consult the designer and/or client.

Hausmate naming convention

Every item in a Hausmate installation has a unique Hausmate name. This identifies each item in our schedules, drawings, on cabling, on hardware and in the diagnostic software included in the web UI. See the ‘Hausmate Naming Convention’ document for a full explanation (only a wiki post about this) .

The main idea is that to every connected object  in the property a base address made up of 3 parts has been assigned – the building number, the zone in that building and the item itself. Building 0 is always outside, the main building is normally building 1.  The zone is normally a room in a building or an area outside e.g. drive, back garden. The item could be a light switch – be it a conventional rocker switch, a Haze (like a dimmer switch), or a lighting circuit. Example of Hausmate names:

  •  1-5-RSW2 – this is in building 1, zone (room) 5, rocker switch no. 2 in this zone.
  •  0-1-LCT1 – this is outside, in zone 1, light circuit no.1 in this zone.

Installation

Wiring schedules are provided for a first and second fix, sorted by zone and by hardware item. At the second fix the cables are labelled with custom ‘wrap around’ cable labels and the Hausmate hardware is provided with custom labels so that connecting cables to hardware is just a matter of matching the labels and connecting.

All mains (230Vac) cabling has to be tested as per the current issue of the wiring regulations (BS7671). Programming of the Hausmate system is custom for each installation, but due to the way that the installation is designed by Hausmate using special CAD software, Hausmate will provide the installer with the software configuration files which set up the system for that installation. Commissioning the system requires the main software to be started and then, using diagnostics screens, checking that all the inputs are working properly, then all the outputs are working properly and then that everything is functioning as required. Minor ‘tweeks’, like setting up lighting scenes, are easily done using the settings screens on the User Interface (UI) – the installations own website.

  • First fix: The Wiring schedule is a list of cables that need to be 'pulled' at this stage of the installation. The schedule shows the cables to be pulled for each zone (e.g. a room in the house, an area of garden outside the house). For each cable it shows a cable start point, a cable finish point and a minimum specification for the cable. The start and finish points are identified using the ‘Hausmate naming convention’ to identify which building and which zone/room the cable ends are in. Look at the Hausmate supplied plans to see roughly where these are within the room/zone.
  • Second fix: the cables are cut to final length and terminated in fixtures and fittings.
